My second visit to the USA was in 1978, and I went with my friend Peter Charlton. We travelled around from New York to Los Angeles, via the southern route, with a company called Trek America, this was a camping vacation, and proved to be a fantastic three week tour, but we were in the USA for one month in total.

On this trip we started off in New York, and travelling by Trek America mini bus to such places as Washington DC, Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, Chattanooga, Tennessee, New Orleans, Louisiana, The Alamo, San Antonio, Texas, The Jersey Lil, West Of The Pecos, Texas, Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico, Tombstone, Arizona, Apache Lake, Arizona, Old Tucson, Arizona, The Grand Canyon, National Park, Arizona, The Hoover Dam, Nevada, Las Vegas, Nevada, Los Angeles, California, Universal Studios, Hollywood, California, Disneyland, Anaheim, California, San Diego, California, to stay with a couple of friends I met in 1977, Ami & Vanessa. While in San Diego, we visited SeaWorld and San Diego Zoo. This vacation was a fantastic adventure, travelling across the USA with like minded people all of our age group, each person had a specific job to do, to keep the camping holiday flowing correct without any hitches. The food that we ate was cooked at the campsite by us, and was fantastic. There was never a dull moment with all our new friends, it was like a little happy family.
While in New Orleans, Louisiana, myself and my friend Peter while walking around, came upon Muhammad Ali, who was standing on a box, outside a sports shop, talking to the crowd, we watched this for around one and half hours, he was so funny and charismatic, although I was not close to him, I did manage to get some photos of him, one in particular as he was getting ushered to his car, I just held my camera up and hoped for the best, and got a fantastic shot. We had a fantastic time, this camping tour with Trek America was great, there is one person we met all those years ago, Derek Parker whom we still keep in contact with, and have a couple of beers together in Newcastle at least once a year.
